Halifax County 61, George Washington 52
George Washington senior guard Alan Smith scored a game-high 23 points, but Halifax County was able to come away with a 61-52 victory in the Western Valley District opener for both teams Tuesday in South Boston.
Ahmad Thomas added 15 points for the Eagles (6-6, 0-1).
Ford Bradshaw (21 points), Dekota Delaware (19) and Freddie Edmunds (11) combined to score 51 points for the Blue Comets (3-6, 1-0).
GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL
George Washington 67, Halifax County 18
George Washington held Halifax County to four second-half points and had a solid all-around team performance in a 67-18 thrashing of the Blue Comets in the Western Valley District opener for both teams.
Bri Fitzgerald scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Eagles (8-2, 1-0). Jamonica Pinkney scored eight points and Khadijah Wilson added seven points. A trio of GW players scored six points each (Laprecious England, Anissa Linder and Kapriesha Thompson), and Brittany Hightower and Courtney Martin each finished with nine rebounds.
“We played really well tonight,” GW coach Wayne Shelton said.
Altavista 44, Chatham 41
Jaliyuah Giggetts and Tori McKenzie scored 10 points each as Chatham lost a heartbreaker to Altavista, 44-41, in Altavista.
Millie Walker finished with eight points and seven rebounds for the Cavaliers (6-3, 2-1).
