For most of the season, Averett has wanted opponents to see White and Redd all over as a dominant force out of the backfield.
There was plenty of Ke’Von White against Methodist last weekend and that is what the Cougars want to finish the season.
White, a true freshman out of Midlothian, finally had his breakout game on the collegiate ranks, rushing for 217 yards and two scores in the Cougars’ overtime victory last weekend against Methodist.
With most of the attention of today’s senior game against Shenandoah, the freshman will undoubtedly be asked to help give the 12 seniors one final victory at the Cougar Den.
White’s rushing total ranks second in Averett history for single-game performances and it earned him a spot on the D3Football.com National Team of the Week.
“It’s all about work ethic for me. I come out every day and work hard so I can compete with everybody out here,” White said earlier in the season. “Offensive line, I give all of them the credit. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing right now.”
White, who was also named the USA South Conference Offensive Rookie of the Week, is the 13th Averett player to earn a spot on the National Team of the Week.
His performance was what had been expected from him and fellow freshman Jeff Redd in helping add balance to an Averett offensive attack that has always produced numbers through the air.
“If you can get an established running game, it starts opening things on the passing game,” Averett coach Mike Dunlevy said. “The running opens those things for you. The better we can run the football, the better we’re going to be able to pass. We know that and again, having these two young guys — just their work ethic and how hard they work — both of them have been tremendous assets for us right away.”
White (714) and Redd (424) have combined for 1,138 rushing yards this season and that total makes up a little more than 93 percent of the Cougars’ rushing total this season (1,223).
“It gave us a big confidence knowing that we could run the ball like that,” Redd said. “It’s a big confidence knowing we can do that as a team.”
