The Nelson Govs football team got together on Dec. 22 at the high school to celebrate another football season with lots of food and awards.
Head coach Mark Wells presented first-year players with a varsity jacket letter while returning players received pins.
The following were the Nelson special awards presented.
Rodrell Smith: Most outstanding offensive player; second team all-Dogwood District RB. “Great player that could play anywhere and could take over a game and never gave less than 110 percent,” said Wells.
Clayton Clarkson: Most outstanding defensive player; honorable mention all-district; led team in tackles and played numerous positions on defense.
William Brown: The Bruce Johnson Award. “For his overall team-first ideas and hustle and commitment to the Nelson County football team,” Wells said.
On the JV level, Peyton Galloway was picked as the most outstanding offensive player and Cody Martin was named the most outstanding defensive player.
NCHS cheerleaders coach Deborah Berry handed out awards to her group of girls, which has more than tripled in numbers over the last couple of years.
