Cave Spring's Wright, Galax's Dixon win 1st & 10 player, coach of the year

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Cave Spring's Sam Wright often was a marked man, but he still managed to rush for 2792 yards and 40 touchdowns in leading the Knights into the Division 3 State semifinals. Cave Spring fell to eventual state champion Brookville, but Wright's efforts despite being keyed upon in almost every game were more than admirable. The senior gave credit to all those that helped him, and said they deserve more praise, and he's just the lucky one getting it all.

Galax Coach Mark Dixon took the Maroon Tide on a two-year ride that ended one game from a dream season. Dixon took a 3-7 team, and turned them into a 9-4 squad in one year, then recorded the school's first ever undefeated regular season, its first State semifinal win, its first state finals appearance, the school's longest win streak, and they became the highest scoring team ever to come out of Galax. Mark Dixon gave credit to a bunch of kids that were ready to win and he just needed to get out of their way.

Virginia Tech Senior Advisor to the head coach and longtime running backs coach Billy Hite was the guest speaker, and all ten of the Players of the week during the year were honored.
