Danville took a five-run lead into the seventh inning Saturday, before holding off a late run by Johnson City and winning 7-5 to even the series at a game apiece.
The Braves built a 6-1 with one run in the first, third and sixth innings and three in the fifth — the latter included a three-run homer to right by Jason Mowry.
But the Cardinals, who won Friday’s series opener 12-5, fought back with four runs in the top of the eighth to cut Danville’s lead to one. The Braves added an insurance run in the bottom half on Elmer Reyes’ RBI single to center, making it 7-5.
D-Braves’ Kyle Mertins pitching 1 2-3 innings in relief to earn his third save. Starter Kyle Farrell picked up the victory, allowing one earned run on three hits and a walk in seven solid innings of work. He finished with four strikeouts.
Angel De Jesus (1-1) took the loss for Johnson City, allowing five earned runs on eight hits in five innings.
The two teams wrap up the series with the rubber game at 4 p.m. today at Dan Daniel Memorial Park.
