Oscar Taveras ripped four hits and piled up five RBIs as Johnson City brutalized the Danville Braves, winning 12-5 on a sweltering Friday night at Dan Daniel Park in a game that lasted nearly three hours, the longest contest of the season for Danville.
Johnson City (21-10) racked up those 12 runs on 20 hits, both totals the most allowed by the D-Braves (16-15) this season. It could have been much worse, as Johnson City somehow left an astounding 16 base runners stranded.
The Cardinals scored at least two runs in each of the first four innings as the visitors raced to a nine-run lead, and Johnson City's leadoff man reached base in each of the first seven innings.
Virgil Hill went 4-for-4 with two runs for Johnson City. Philip Cerreto and Kleininger Teran each rapped out three hits.
Danville lefty Ronan Pacheco took the loss after surrendering five runs on seven hits before leaving the game after 1 2-3 innings because of heat-related reasons. Jamie Hayes allowed five runs in seven hits in three innings of relief and Matt Lewis coughed up a pair of runs in one inning before Edigson Mora entered the game and quieted the Cardinals somewhat.
Ryan Copeland earned his fourth victory of the season, limiting Danville to three runs on four hits in five innings. He struck out seven and walked none.
Barrett Kleinknecht went 3-for-4 with a double, a homer and three runs scored for Danville and Evan Gattis pushed his hitting streak to a D-Braves season-high nine games by crushing a two-run home run to left field in the fourth inning.
