E.C. Glass at GW

FACTS: George Washington unveiled an effective passing game toward the end of last week’s victory, which was a critical component of the Eagles taking the lead since their running attack had been largely contained. … GW owns a 2-0 record for the first time in three seasons. … GW coach Dan Newell declared that junior Kevin Shuler would be the primary quarterback for this season, with last year’s starter, Tim Moore, getting on the field offensively as a tight end. Moore also has three interceptions in two games this season. … E.C. Glass dropped its first two games of the season, both at home, to former Western Valley District rivals Franklin County and William Fleming. The Hilltoppers are in their first season in the Seminole District. … Glass, which posted a 4-6 record last season, hasn’t won a road game since squeaking past Halifax County, 24-23, on Oct. 17, 2008.

FACTS: Chatham has probably worked on ball security in this week’s practices after turning the ball over six times — four in the first quarter — in last week’s loss to Randolph-Henry. … The Cavaliers gave up 22 points off turnovers. … After a sloppy first half, Chatham allowed only seven points, but were unable to mount much of a challenge. … Chatham recorded 118 yards of offense, 72 on the ground. … The defense played well despite the offense’s inefficiencies, holding Randolph-Henry to 169 yards of total offense. … Tunstall got it’s ground game going with 250 yards in the Trojans’ win over Rustburg. … Justin Williams rushed for 130 yards, including a 53-yard scamper for a touchdown. … Senior quarterback Tae Gunter rushed for at least 60 yards for the second consecutive game. … The Trojans’ defense has not allowed any fourth-quarter points this season and only 14 points have been scored against Tunstall in the second half of games. … Since 2000, Tunstall has won five of the nine games between the county rivals. … Tunstall won the first four matchups before Chatham won four consecutive. … Tunstall won last year’s game 20-7 at Chatham with remnants of Hurricane Hanna dumping water on the two teams.

FACTS: Dan River held Amelia County to 18 yards rushing on 22 attempts. … The Wildcats have given up 155 yards on the ground in two games. … On the other side of the ball, the Wildcats have rushed for 668 yards in two games and gained a meager 46 yards through the air. … Senior linebacker R.J. Myers intercepted his first pass in high school against Amelia County and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown. … Myers is averaging 12 tackles per game. … Dan River has lost eight consecutive games against Gretna, including being shutout three times. … Nick Miller, the 2007 Associated Press Group A State Player of the Year, completed 4 of 8 passes for 56 yards and rushed 17 times for 86 yards in the Hawks’ game against Liberty Christian. … Both touchdowns Gretna gave up to LCA were the result of turnovers. …The Hawks primary offensive weapon was Miller, who was utilized through the zone blocking in the spread offense that is similar to what the University of Florida runs with Tim Tebow.

FACTS: Blue Ridge and Hargrave haven’t played each other since the Barons captured a 35-15 victory on Oct. 8, 2004 in Chatham. … Hargrave was ripped to shreds in its season opener last week, in large part because of poor special teams play. Isle of Wight’s Daniel Price returned a punt 45 yards for a score and Heath Price cruised 99 yards for a touchdown on a kickoff return during the rout. … Daniel Price also returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown. … The Tigers surrendered a lot of yardage on the ground, as well, allowing Heath Price to churn out 177 yards and a score. … Hargrave senior running back Danny Smith produced a career-high 122 yards on 19 touches to lead the Tigers offense while senior linebacker Travis Hall paced the defense with 10 tackles and a sack.

McMichael clobbered South Stokes 54-0 while BY upended the Sauras 40-9. … BY senior quarterback Tony Wilson completed 6 of 11 passes for 161 yards, two touchdowns and an interception last week. He also rushed 11 times for 95 yards and three scores. … BY has scored 40 points in each of its last two games. The Bucs never scored more than 20 points in a game last season. … BY, which is going for its third victory this season, has five total wins in the last five seasons combined and has not won more than two games in a season during that span. The Bucs last won three games in a season in 2002, when they posted a 3-7 record.
