CHATHAM — As Chatham’s defense time after time held Nelson County out of the end zone when the Governors were threatening in regulation, it was only fitting that the defense made two stands in overtime to give the offense a chance to get that elusive first win.
Chatham junior quarterback Cam McClellan scored on a touchdown run on the Cavaliers’ first play in the second overtime, sending Chatham to a thrilling 28-22 homecoming victory Friday night in a Dogwood District matchup.
“Everybody blocked well for me. When it comes down to the last minute and you’ve got to have a big play, just had to lead my team and make the play,” McClellan said. “I told my team I was going to stick it in and get it in the end zone. They blocked for me well and I got in there.”
The Chatham (1-7, 1-3 Dogwood) defense came up huge in both overtimes, holding the Governors out of the end zone. Nelson (1-7, 0-4 Dogwood) had an opportunity in the first overtime to score from the 5-yard line, but the Cavaliers defense forced an incomplete pass and penalties hurt the Governors on their second-overtime possession.
Nelson County senior running back Trey Barnett was virtually the entire Governors’ offense. Barnett rushed for a game-high 176 yards and added a touchdown on the ground. He also caught two passes for 29 yards and a touchdown. Both of Barnett’s touchdowns came in the fourth quarter.
“We started off flatfooted. The second half, we gave it all we could,” Barnett said. “Penalties hurt us a lot. We had a lot of penalties which hurt us when we got in the red zone, so that kept moving us back and making it harder for us to score.”
Nelson had numerous chances to get the ball in the end zone early. Barnett had three carries on the Governors’ first drive of the game for 69 yards, but a holding penalty and a Chatham sack moved Nelson back and the Governors were unable to convert on fourth down.
The added life allowed Chatham to take a 14-0 lead in the second quarter after Wesley East ran to the end zone from 11 yards out with 8:25 left and McClellan scored his first touchdown less than 5 minutes later.
Three Chatham running backs rushed for more than 80 yards. East led the charge with 97 yards on 18 carries, while Brandon Walker added 89 yards on 15 attempts and McClellan finished with 86 yards on the ground.
“The offensive line did a great job tonight,” Chatham coach Malon Dalton said. “Our backs blocked well, ran the football tough, but our offensive line played their best game all year.”
Both teams were hampered with penalties. Chatham was flagged 10 times for 96 yards and Nelson was hit with 68 penalty yards on eight flags.
Chatham was up by as much as 22-8 when Marcus Clements rushed 11 yards for a touchdown with 9:32 left in the fourth quarter. Nelson would get both of Barnett’s touchdowns in the next 6 minutes to tie it up. The potential go-ahead extra point on Barnett’s second touchdown was bobbled and the pass for the two-point conversion fell short of the intended receiver.
“Our kids are waiting too long to turn the light switch on,” Nelson County coach Mark Wells said. “Chatham played great being their homecoming and a little more fired up than we were and we had our chances.”
Barnett recorded 205 of Nelson’s 213 yards of total offense. James Saunders completed five passes for 53 yards, but was held to minus-26 yards rushing. He also threw an interception to McClellan that ended another Nelson drive in the red zone.
“We buckled down several times and made stands down there,” Dalton said. “That’s the difference in the football game. If we wouldn’t have done that, it wouldn’t have gone to overtime.”
