Nagee Jackson scored three touchdowns and Cedric Agyeman added two more as Battlefield dismantled George Washington 42-6 Friday night at J.T. Christopher Stadium in Danville.
GW (3-3), reeling after being outscored 114-19 combined in losses to undefeated opponents the last three weeks, matched its longest losing streak since dropping three straight contests to start the 2002 season.
“We’re having problems. There ain’t no question about it,” GW coach Dan Newell said. “And it was several different people. … We false snapped it, we had fullbacks move, we had tailbacks move, the whole gamut. We had people not lining up in the formation correct. Every little thing that could have gone wrong did.”
Jackson plowed ahead for 110 yards on 21 carries and was pulled after scoring his third touchdown after GW fumbled at its own 30-yard line on the first play of the second half. Agyeman, his backup, racked up 89 yards on 11 carries, including a 50-yard touchdown burst that put Battlefield (6-0) ahead 35-6 midway through the third quarter. Agyeman’s second score, a 3-yard plunge as time expired in the third, secured a running clock for the entire fourth quarter.
“The line came out and they just exploded. I think everybody got accustomed to this new environment and everybody played their game,” Jackson said. “I think we took control in the second quarter. We took them out of their game by the third quarter and it was all us from then.”
Battlefield, located just outside Washington, D.C., and ranked No. 7 in Virginia by maxpreps.com, out-rushed GW 221 yards to 72. GW, showing a lack of discipline, was flagged 10 times for 73 yards and the Eagles managed just three first downs in the game, including one on a Battlefield penalty.
“I felt like we moved the ball fairly effectively at times, but we just get turnovers and penalties,” Newell said. “I’m not trying to make any excuses, but it sure would be nice for us to find out if we could actually play with these guys without making mistakes. If we played mistake-free football, I wonder what it would look like the last three weeks.”
Seven of Battlefield’s 10 drives started at midfield or in GW territory and the Bobcats began another drive at their own 45.
DeVaughn Benion led the Eagles with 62 yards from scrimmage, but 56 of those yards came on consecu-tive plays in the second quarter. He caught a 32-yard pass from Kevin Shuler and took off on a 24-yard touchdown run on the next play to cut GW’s deficit to 21-6 just 2 minutes before the half. The Eagles, who managed only 8 total yards of offense before those two plays, missed the point after.
Bobcats 6-foot-6, 220-pound quarterback Bo Revell, who is being recruited by a number of major Divi-sion I college football programs, completed 4 of 10 passes for 104 yards and a score. Bobo Beathard snagged three of those passes for 92 yards and Blaine Mason caught a 22-yard touchdown pass.
“GW, they’re a good team,” Battlefield coach Mark Cox said. “We knew that (Benion) was really good and we knew they’d come out and be ready for us. They’ve had a couple of tough losses and they were looking forward to us coming down and playing, probably. We were a little sluggish, but we treated it as if it was like a playoff game and we had to play on the road. We came out ready to play – and it was a long ride.”
