FACTS: Franklin County’s victory against GW on senior night in Danville last week secured the Western Valley District championship for the Eagles from Rocky Mount, who finished the district schedule undefeated. The district title is Franklin County’s fifth overall and first outright championship since 2005. … GW surrendered four touchdowns on special teams in the loss, including two blocked punts for touchdowns, a punt return for a touchdown and a kickoff return for a score. … GW and William Fleming, which are ranked fifth and sixth in the VHSL’s Group AAA Northwest Region Division 5 power rankings, respectively, are both likely to make the playoffs regardless of the outcome of this game, which is the regular season finale. If Mountain View (4-5), currently seventh in the rankings and on the outside looking in, can find a way to defeat Massaponax (7-2), the top-ranked team, tonight in Stafford, the Wildcats could slip into the postseason and bump the loser of the GW-Fleming contest out. … The winner of the GW-Fleming game is virtually assured a spot in the postseason. … GW is 21-19-2 all-time against Fleming. The Colonels defeated GW 20-17 last season in Danville.

FACTS: This is Dan River’s final home game of the season. … Dan River, which has won the most games since 2001, is sixth in the Region B Division 2 ratings at 18.0 points — 2.7 behind fourth-place Appomattox. … The Wildcats last appeared in the playoffs in 2001 as members of Group AA and the Piedmont District. … Dan River senior middle linebacker R.J. Myers is averaging 15 tackles per game and recorded 20 in last year’s meeting with Appomattox. … Since Dan River moved to the Dogwood District, the Wildcats have lost both meetings to Appomattox. The Raiders won 13-6 in 2007 and the teams combined to score seven fourth-quarter touchdowns in Appomattox’s 32-27 victory last year in Ringgold. … A victory by Appomattox would guarantee the Raiders a share of the Dogwood District title, as the Raiders are currently tied with Altavista and Gretna for first in the district. … Appomattox has finished with eight wins in each of the last two seasons after combining to win seven games from 2003-06. … Raiders quarterback Kenny Scott finished last year’s game with 171 yards passing and 122 yards rushing. FACTS: Gretna is the top-rated Region B Division 2 team in the VHSL power ratings and ranked No. 10 in the Associated Press Group A state poll. … The Hawks are in a three-way tie with Altavista and Appomattox for first in the Dogwood District. Gretna defeated Altavista and lost to Appomattox. … This is Gretna’s senior night. … Aside from 2005 when Gretna allowed 34 points in both games against Chatham, the Hawks have held to the Cavaliers to 14 or fewer points eight times, including three shutouts. … Chatham has defeated Gretna once since 2000 — a 2005 first-round Region B playoff game.
