YANCEYVILLE — The J.F. Webb Warriors defeated the Bartlett Yancey Bucaneers 46-14 on Friday night behind the outstanding play of quarterback Antwan Thorpe, who scored six total touchdowns.
In the first half, Thorpe was basically a one-man show. He amassed a total of 282 yards — 184 passing and 98 rushing — while leading the Warriors (4-0) to a dominating 25-6 halftime lead. Three of his first-half touchdowns were passes to receiver Darquis Thomas and Thorpe added a 63-yard touchdown run on top of that. He finished the night with 10 carries for 139 yards and a touchdown and nine completions for 223 yards and five touchdowns.
“The long touchdown run got me hyped,” said Thorpe. “After that, we went to the deep routes to Darquis and he was making plays, too.”
“Antwan had a big night for us,” said J.F. Webb coach John Hammett. “And Darquis ran some good routes, but overall I thought we played sloppy and left 17 points on the field in the first half with turnovers and penalties.”
The Buccaneers (1-3) couldn’t get any offensive rhythm throughout the game. Other than the two touchdowns they scored, their biggest play of the game was a 75-yard fumble recovery by linebacker Juwan Simpson in the first quarter. Simpson was tackled on the 14-yard line and the Bucs didn’t go any farther, as they ran four plays and gained no yardage before turning the ball back over to the Warriors on downs.
Running back Raphael Stephens put the Bucs on the board with a two-yard plunge with 2:54 to play in the first half, bringing the score to 12-6. That deficit grew quickly, however, as Thorpe dropped back and hit Thomas with a 65-yard strike down the sideline on the ensuing play, allowing Thomas to stride into the end zone untouched.
Bartlett Yancey scored its final touchdown on a 27-yard pass from Ryan Blackwell to receiver Jamar Shaw with 4:35 to play in the game.
“Tonight was a bad night for us, but we will bounce back from this and be ready to compete next game,” BY coach Jason Phelps said.
