Too much Britt for Rockingham in 48-0 loss

ELON — Over the past two seasons, Western Alamance quarterback Donald Britt has made a lot of teams in the state look bad. Friday night was no different, as the senior signal caller ac-counted for six touchdowns and 280 total yards as the Warriors defeated Rockingham County, 48-0.
Britt threw for four touchdowns and ran for two more as Western improved to 5-2 on the season (2-0 in Triad 3-A Conference) and won for the fifth straight game.
“Western Alamance is a lot better football team in person than they looked on film and coach Capps is a great coach and he’s got them on a roll,” said RCHS head coach Lin Stadler.
Rockingham County, now 1-5 on the year (0-2 in conference), continues to suffer countless inju-ries. Having 10 players injured and unable to play, the Cougars suffered two more injuries Friday — this time on the defensive line. RCHS was already without two starting linebackers, two cor-nerbacks and a quarterback.
Western took the opening kickoff and quickly set the tone as the defending 3-A state champi-ons. Starting from their own 43-yard line, the Warriors marched 57 yards in five plays and Britt’s 37-yard strike to Dominique Bridges gave the home team a lead (6-0) they would not relinquish.
The Cougars seemed poised to answer on their first possession. Rockingham began from its own 15, converted 2 third-downs, however a holding call against the Cougars ended the march at the Western 40-yard line — where they were forced to punt.
The Warriors scored on 5 of their 6 first-half possessions, the sixth was simply to run out the first-half clock and take their 34-0 lead into the locker rooms.
During the 34-point barrage, Western got 72- and 6-yard TD runs as well as 18- and 16-yard TD passes from Britt. Britt hooked up with Doug Bernard for 18 yards with 8:38 left in the half and then with Billy Williamson for 16 yards with just 1:33 left on the clock.
Rockingham nearly matched Western’s passing yards (153-132), but the game was decided by the Warriors impressive 242 yards rushing on 33 attempts (7.3 per attempt).
“When you’re a playing a team of their caliber and when you’re in the position we’re in — health-wise and other-wise, all those things have to come together,” said Stadler. “They played nearly mistake-free football and we did not do a good job of attacking on defense.”
Friday marked the fifth time in sixth game, the Cougar defense allowed more than 200 yard rushing to an opponent. In Rockingham’s defense, three of those teams — Western, Greensboro Dudley and Reidsville — are all defending state champions and Dudley and Reidsville are a com-bined 13-0 following Friday night’s action.
RCHS was held to 72 yards rushing on 20 carries (3.6), led by Cody Munson’s 11 carries for 23 yards. Travis Long added 31 yards on his only attempt of the night.
Through the air, Munson was efficient once again as he completed 13 of 25 passes for 132 yards, but was intercepted twice. On Monday, he was 18 of 29 passing, but again was intercepted two times.
Rob Fields of RCHS led all receivers with 94 yards and six receptions — both career highs.
In the second half, Rockingham County traveled into Western territory three times but was un-able to come away with points. Twice the Cougars had their drives stall inside the 15-yard line and had two field goal attempts miss to the left.
Western’s second-half scores came from Jordan Gaines, on a 49-yard pass from Britt and P.J. Wright, who closed out the scoring by returning a Munson pass 56-yards for a score.
After three straight road games, RCHS returns home to face Bartlett Yancey (1-5, 0-1) and former Cougar defensive coordinator Jason Phelps. Phelps left RCHS in the offseason to take the head coach job in Yanceyville. On Friday, the Buccaneers were defeated 41-0 — one of three shut-outs in the Triad 3-A Conference. The other was a Western Guilford 43-0 win over winless More-head (0-6, 0-2).
