GRETNA — Quarterback Jayme Barksdale added to his already gaudy season totals, rushing for three touchdowns on 90 yards. Running backs Andre Dickerson and Kwame Berger each added touchdowns on 115 and 95 yards, respectively. This onslaught by foot ended Altavista’s season as Gretna downed the Colonels 35-0 in a Dogwood District game Friday night.
Gretna (9-1, 5-1) quickly threw 21 points on the scoreboard by the 2:05 mark in the first quarter. All night Altavista (5-5, 2-4) struggled to remain on the field, having to punt on five occasions. The Colonels’ inability to hold on to the football —fumbling five times, two of which Gretna recovered — didn’t help matters.
One of these fumbles came as the Colonels were attempting a short yardage field goal to erase the goose egg from the books.
Hawks defensive back and wide receiver Ted Jennings roved the field in predatory fashion, making several key tackles and blocks, while adding a fumble recovery. The Iron Man made an evening out of stifling every ounce of Colonels momentum.
“I feel really good about our team heading into the playoffs,” declared Gretna coach Chris Thurman. “Our young guys are really playing well, the run looked very good and everybody is hitting it hard. When you have had a 10 game grind like us, it makes me proud to see our guys continually step up and respond. Now we just have to wait and see who we face in the playoffs.”
Colonels coach Mike Scharnus stoically stated, “It’s really tough when you lose four games in a row, with this being our fourth loss. Our team has improved from last year. I do feel better about next year’s squad, but it’s never fun going home after playing your last game of the year.”
“Our team knows that we’ll be out here next week, and God willing, for the next three weeks here at home,” said Coach Thurman. “We’ll get to prepare this week and be ready for whoever the computer’s Power Ratings determine that we have to play.”
Gretna hosts their first Region B Division II playoff game next Friday. The time and opponent has yet to be determined.
