Salisbury rallies past Lynchburg and into DIII South finals
DANVILLE — Salisbury University rallied with five runs in the eighth inning and advanced to the NCAA Division III South Regional tournament title game with a 5-3 victory against Lynchburg College on Friday at Dan Daniel Park.
Top-seeded Salisbury (41-3) will face the winner of today’s noon game between No. 2 Johns Hopkins and No. 4 Lynchburg (32-12) at 4 p.m. for the championship.
Mike Celenza belted a three-run double to erase Lynchburg’s 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the eighth and the Sea Gulls scored five runs on five hits in the inning.
Johns Hopkins drubs Piedmont, advances to face Lynchburg
DANVILLE — Second-seeded Johns Hopkins eliminated Piedmont from the NCAA Division III South Regional tournament with a 13-6 victory at Dan Daniel Park on Friday.
The Blue Jays unloaded six runs in the third inning after Piedmont (34-14) took an early 2-0 lead. The Lions closed to within 6-5 with three runs in the fourth, but could get no closer. Johns Hopkins (36-6) tacked on three more in the bottom of the fourth before adding a single run in each of the next three innings to assure itself the victory. Todd Emr paced Johns Hopkins with three hits, four RBIs and two runs scored.
Johns Hopkins takes on Lynchburg today at noon for the right to play Salisbury in the championship game.
Salisbury eliminates Christopher Newport from tourney
DANVILLE — Salisbury defeated Christopher Newport 5-1 on Friday, eliminating the Captains from the NCAA Division III South Regional tournament at Dan Daniel Park.
Salisbury snapped a 1-1 tie by scoring three times in the seventh inning, thanks to two hits, two errors and a wild pitch. Andrew Miller paced the Gulls with two hits and Ryan Bennick allowed six hits in the complete-game effort.
