To the editor: The spin masters and paid writing guns have been deployed to blast their opinions in letters to the editor on the benefits of uranium mining for Pittsylvania County. In their cherry-picking the most favorable elements of the various reports, the letters remind me of the old saying that "the first casualty of war is truth." Virginia Uranium appears to have approached their present campaign as war on public opinion with an effort to destroy reasonable opposition before it can gain a defensive position. Can anyone, including the most ardent supporters of uranium mining, guarantee that it will provide 1,000 new high paying jobs that will be in place for at least five years without any layoffs? Can anyone guarantee that the price of uranium will not fall again to the point that mine operation will no longer be profitable? Fortunately, our delegates have resisted money and lobbying power and have thus far counseled a more measured approach so that the state and county might have a chance to discern whether uranium mining is more likely to be beneficial than destructive.
