Around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, a fire broke out in Ruffin, killing a dog and causing a man to be airlifted to a hospital.
The fire happened at 126 Ruffin School Road, the former site of Webster’s Environmental Services, which now serves as a home.
Three people were inside the home when the fire started, according to Tommy Curry, Deputy Fire Marshal for the Rockingham County Fire Marshal’s Office.
Curry said the majority of the fire was in the hallway and bathroom.
“We don’t see anything that looks suspicious at this time,” Curry said. “It all looks accidental.”
The homeowner, Frederick Webster II, made it out safely, but later went back to get his dog from inside the home, which is when the majority of the burns occurred. He was airlifted to Chapel Hill.
Firefighters later found his dog dead inside the home, according to Curry.
Webster’s son, Frederick Webster III, was able to escape the home and helped pull his girlfriend, whose name is being withheld at this time, out of a window, after she became trapped.
Neither was taken to the hospital, though both suffered smoke inhalation and Webster had light burns. They were treated at the scene.
The Ruffin Fire Department was the first to arrive on scene, finding the home filled with heavy smoke and flames. The Oregon Hill Volunteer Fire Department and the Yanceyville Road Fire Department, the Rockingham County Fire Marshal’s Office, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, EMS and the SBI all responded to the blaze.
An estimate of damages is unknown at this time, though Curry said the home is destroyed.
The fire is still under investigation.
