Mayodan enters 2012 with two new people in key staff positions. Following the retirements of Debra Cardwell and David Baker on Dec. 31, Michael Brandt replaced Cardwell as town manager and Cliff Ellington was promoted to fill Baker’s position as public works director. Cardwell served the citizens of Mayodan more than 34 years. Before her appointment as town manager in 1996, Cardwell also served as finance officer and town clerk. Respected throughout the county and state for her public service, Cardwell recently received the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine from North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue. “Her breadth of knowledge, friendly attitude and love for her hometown cannot be replaced,” Mayor James Cardwell said of Debra Cardwell. Brandt began work in Mayodan in early December to ease the transition. He earned a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from the University of New Orleans and was Summerfield’s first town manager. During his eight years serving Summerfield, Brandt oversaw the acquisition and development of property for public parks and obtained more than $1million in grant funds. He also saw Summerfield grow from 7,000 to more than 10,000 residents. Ellington, a 20-year public works veteran, assumes the director’s responsibilities from Baker, who served Mayodan for more than 24 years. Baker worked in several town positions before his appointment as public works director in 1997. In announcing Ellington’s promotion, Brandt acknowledged Baker’s extensive knowledge of Mayodan’s water and sewer systems would be missed. Brandt also mentioned that Ellington served for many years as Baker’s “right-hand man” and brings a strong work ethic and knowledge of his own to his new position. “I believe he will provide strong leadership for the department and quality customer service to our citizens,” Brandt said.
