Stoneville residents will notice an increase on their next water and sewer bills. The town council voted Feb. 7 to pass along the recent 4-percent rate increase from Mayodan.
Town administrator Shirley Price said the new rates would be applied to the invoices going out this week.
“They are only being raised the same amount that the town’s rates went up from the Town of Mayodan,” Price said. “Garbage collection rates have not changed.”
The previous minimum charge for both water and sewer was $23.60 each bimonthly for users inside the town limits. The new minimum will be $24.52 each for two months’ service up to 4,000 gallons. With the addition of a $25.96 bimonthly fee for garbage pickup, the monthly bill for a person not exceeding the 4,000-gallon allowance for both water and sewer would increase from $73.16 to $75.
Stoneville began raising water and sewer rates during the 2008-2009 budget year in an effort to halt the growing deficit between revenues and expenses. That gap was causing the town to continually siphon money from the general fund’s savings to make up shortfalls in the water and sewer fund.
Water and sewer users outside town limits will now be charged $49.08 each bimonthly ($98.16 total) for up to 4,000 gallons – up from $47.20 each. Residents outside town limits will not be charged for garbage because they have separate contracts with Waste Management.
