On Saturday, dozens of people sat outside the ag complex in Chatham sipping wine on an unusually warm February day.
Just 24 hours later the same area was covered in a few inches of snow.
But just as quickly as the winter weather came, it left.
Temperatures on Monday reached 48 degrees as the sun melted away the three inches of accumulated snow that fell Sunday.
And besides city kids enjoying a snow holiday from school, the quick winter blast didn’t phase many in the region.
When snow is in the forecast, it’s typical for residents to stock up with shovels and de-icing products. But, not this time.
Shannon Moon, the manager of Lowe’s Home Improvement store in Danville, said shoppers were much more conservative for the storm than ones in the past.
“It is so late in the year people aren’t investing in snow removal type of items,” said Moon. “With the forecast today being nice, I think people rode it out instead of spending the money to remove it.”
Crews in Danville were able to get ahead of the storm because it began during the afternoon.
“The most difficult snow storms are when it comes down and we have a short amount of time to plow before it freezes and stay there,” said Public Works Director Rick Drazenovich. “In this case, the temperatures were in the 30s when the storm hit and stayed there. That means the salt is working well, keeping the snow from freezing to the road. That makes it easier to plow down to the road surface.”
After an arctic chill, a heat wave of sorts is on the horizon. Tuesday’s forecast is for sunny skies and a high of 55 degrees. By Thursday, highs will soar to near 70.
