Tax preparers will be at the Danville Public Library, 511 Patton St., from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. every Tuesday through April 17 to offer free help to residents preparing tax returns.
Bob Williamson, the Lynchburg District Coordinator for the AARP, said the program is being sponsored by the AARP Foundation and the IRS.
Membership in the AARP is not required.
“This is a free service open to all, with special emphasis to those over age 55,” Williamson said in a news release.
Williamson said the service is provided on a first-come, first-served basis, and no appointments will be made. In the event that more people arrive than preparers can help on a given day, they will stop accepting new clients for that day, Williamson said.
There are no income restrictions on the free program, and preparers are able to help with federal, Virginia and North Carolina returns. However, Williamson said, there are some items the preparers are not trained to handle, such as farm income.
Clients need to bring their 2011 tax documents, Social Security cards and a government-issued ID.
Williamson also recommends clients bring a copy of their 2010 return since information on that can help complete the current year’s return.
Williamson said taxpayers get an extra two days to file their federal tax return this year since April 15 is a Sunday and April 16 is a federal holiday.
