Writer: Meet with us, don't diss us

To the editor:

Regarding the story, "Locals join in protest in Richmond" (Feb. 15, page A1), I want to speak out in support of those 100 members of Virginia Organizing who gathered in Richmond to express their disappointment with the General Assembly’s focus on conservative social issues over education and jobs.

While pleased to see such interest from across Virginia — and specifically from Danville — I am shocked at the response of Del. Danny Marshall in the article. Marshall was in session and unable to meet with the group one on one. Instead of answering their concerns over his misplaced priorities, he railed against Virginia Organizing, a group that I strongly support.

Virginia Organizing is a statewide organization, which encourages the "active participation and empowerment of many different groups of people on a variety of issues." They promote action using non-violent means. Virginia Organizing encourages the participation of those who have had "little to no voice in our society," something we need more of, especially as the General Assembly threatens our voting rights.

Del. Marshall does a great disservice to constituents when he makes a "hot button" statement to take legitimacy away from their efforts to effect change. Such comments might make good sound bites, but they do nothing to solve the severe issues facing Virginia.
