Wednesday meeting will review price estimates for Danville streetscape project

A preliminary cost estimate to give streetscapes a makeover in the River District is expected to be presented at a public meeting Wednesday.

“We will give a brief report on the River District revitalization and summary of our investigations including pavement composition, utility services and a traffic study,” said Kent Shelton, city engineer and assistant director of public works, in a news release.

Landscape Planning and Design Associates — a Charlottesville design team hired for the project — will review a proposed sequence of construction and preliminary cost estimate, according to the release.

“There are tradeoffs with the cost of features to stay within budget,” Shelton said. “For example, if we want granite curbs, then we may have to have more concrete sidewalk, and less brick sidewalk.”

The firm will also present two plans for the street cross section. It will provide four pavement pattern layout options with patterns, materials and curb types for the stakeholders to provide their opinion and feedback.

Plans will be rolled out on tables for residents to walk around and view, the release stated.

Wednesday’s meeting will be the second on the streetscape project that aims to bring new life to the River District.

The project will focus on Main Street from Memorial Drive and Craghead Street to Floyd Street and on North Union Street from Main Street to Spring Street.

Funds will be used to widen existing sidewalks, install brick pavers, create more visible and safer pedestrian crossings, and provide amenities such as outdoor café space, trees, benches and new lighting.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Galileo High School on Ridge Street.
