Governor Bob McDonnell took the stage a little late Friday afternoon at Washington & Lee University's Mock Convention. The governor had to come down from speaking at the CPAC convention earlier in the day.
But McDonnell got right down to business, and didn't hide who he wants to be the Republican presidential nominee, mentioning Mitt Romney several times.
“Your taxes will be kept low and reasonable, because spending will be kept in check," McDonnell stated about what would happen should Romney be elected president.
On defense spending: “Mitt Romney will make sure we've got a strong national defense," McDonnell said.
On the economy: “Mitt Romney has created opportunities for other people, over 100,000 in capital and new businesses, like Target and other companies," McDonnel said.
Then there was one Freudian slip that could foreshadow the governor's future aspirations. "When I ran for President, ah I mean Governor..." drew a lot of laughs, then a long applause for McDonnell.
It was a very funny moment, but McDonnell was very serious when he stressed the importance of any of the Republican candidates to win the White House.
"Unemployment is over eight percent. In fact it's been over eight percent every month of this President's reign ecept one. He said if you pass the stimulus bill and these other bailouts, it'll never go above eight percent. Well guess what? It hasn't gotten below,” said McDonnell.
