How many seven-year-old girls would take a bag of kitty litter as a birthday gift over an awesome new toy? One such girl exists in Browns Summit, and she just gave a car load of donations to the Animal Shelter in Rockingham County.
Angela Rosson said her daughter Leah Rosson would get extremely sad when she saw commercials on television depicting sad animals in need of donations to survive.
“The commercials on TV just break your heart and she loves all animals – she wanted to know what she could do to help,” Angela said. “We talked about something she could do with her birthday coming up, and I asked her if this was something she might want to do. She didn’t even hesitate in saying yes.”
Leah invited her entire class to her seventh “puppy” party on Jan. 28 and asked, instead of birthday gifts, that attendees bring dry dog and cat food, cat litter, blankets, towels and rubber dog toys. Her mother said it was a huge hit with all her friends at Friendship United Methodist Church in Browns Summit.
When asked if she would consider doing something like this again for animals in need, a shy Leah just nodded to her mother and simply said yes, and that she wasn’t upset she didn’t get any birthday presents.
Leah’s brother Seth also came along and pitched in helping to unload the car with Animal Shelter Director Kevin Baughn, who said it’s great when people in the community pitch in to help the local shelter.
The family asked Baughn about volunteer opportunities, and he was more than happy to oblige. He told them to come back in the spring and summer when the weather gets warm so Leah can walk puppies and dogs on the trail by the shelter.
