Children drill into propane tank, cause leak, Danville fire officials say

»  Comments | Post a Comment

After investigating a propane leak, the Danville Fire Department found that two brothers, ages eight and 10, had drilled holes into a propane cylinder with a cordless drill.

At 10 a.m. the fire department was called to 1042 Halifax Road where they found a leaking 20 pound propane cylinder tank, according to a news release.

Fire fighters discovered the tank had a hole in the top of it and the handle was missing. The Danville Hazardous Materials Team tried to stop the leak but was unsuccessful.

According to the news release, fire fighters remained on the scene for about two hours to allow the tank to vent safely without any complications. No one was reported injured.

"The two children were extremely lucky not to have caused the cylinder to explode," the release stated. "The Danville Fire Marshall's Office reminds everyone of the dangers associated with propane gas. These cylinders are under high pressure and are explosive if not handled correctly."
