To the editor: Recently, Danville City Council felt the city could afford to spend $1.3 million for city employee bonuses from general fund revenues. Now we are reading City Manager Joe King, is asking for citizen input as to where services need to be cut to avoid property, utility and other tax increases which citizens and businesses cannot afford. I suggest King read the article, "Electricity to be produced from methane" (Jan. 27, page A2). Martinsville is planning to generate 1.06 megawatts of electricity from methane gas captured at their landfill operation, which could generate up to $2 million over the next 10 years in net electricity generation cost savings. Then, King should read the article "Obama’s science adviser visits city," on the front page of the same date in which John Holdren was pictured in the lily research laboratory at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research. Maybe our city administration ought to take advantage of the Institute facilities to investigate what Martinsville is doing to increase electricity generation revenue savings and see if it is a feasible operation to pursue in Danville at our landfill. If feasible, not only would it generate electricity savings and avoid tax increases, but it just might turn out to be the most profitable research undertaken at the Institute since its inception.
