On Friday night, a truck fire in Ruffin backed up traffic on U.S. Highway 29 and left a family without their vehicle.
A man just purchased a camper and was bringing it home but had a problem with his vehicle, which sparked the fire, according to Ruffin Volunteer Fire Department first assistant chief Betty Jean Cardwell.
Highway 29 was shut down to fight the fire, according to Cardwell. No one was injured, though two adults and a child were in the vehicle.
Rumors of a HAZMAT situation circulated on scene, but Cardwell said the truck had three-fourths of a tank of diesel fuel in it and the department was trying to contain it while spraying water on the fire, which they were able to do.
Cardwell said the truck was a total loss, but the camper had little damage. The fire department took the family back to their station and was looking for a place for them to stay overnight. The chief was also looking for a safe place to store the camper overnight.
A North Carolina Highway Patrol officer assisting on scene estimated traffic was backed up into Caswell County.
The Oregon Hill Fire Department and the Yanceyville Fire Department assisted on the scene. The Highway Patrol and the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office helped with traffic control.
