After facing a $5.2 million hole in its budget next year, Danville Public School officials have proposed closing several of its school buildings.
The school board met with the Danville City Council today to talk about its concerns with the budget and how it can deal with the shortfall.
"No specific buildings have been targeted for closure at this early stage in budget development, but the administration is working hard to project potential savings in several scenarios of closures," said school board vice chairman Ed Polhamus.
Assistant superintendent Kathy Osborne said this could save an estimated $2.4 million.
The school system has already let go of 81 employees in the past three years, and a large number of layoffs does not seem possible to administrators, since there are state limits for how many children must be in a classroom. Many classrooms are already at their maximum of students.
School officials are continuing to work to find other ways to battle cuts and no official budget has been proposed.
