“We will lose our country if the church does not wake up.”

This was the message of Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Jerry Boykin on Thursday as he spoke to dozens of local pastors in Danville at the Stratford Courtyard Conference Center.

The Family Foundation, a Virginia Christian non-profit organization, offered a special presentation to local pastors on the role of the Christian church in the government.

Boykin and Randy Wilson of the Family Research Council spoke to a crowd of about 50 people about Christian values being under attack and the importance of electing politicians with Christian values.

Boykin described himself as non-denominational and did not claim a political party. But he said he was a “conservative Christian.”

He and Wilson referenced several laws that were un-Christian and harmful to society, laws such as those legalizing gay marriage and abortion, they as was a 1954 amendment from then-Sen. Lyndon Johnson which took away a church’s non-profit status if it endorsed political candidates.

“If we believe in Jesus Christ, we’re right,” said Boykin. “And the truth will prevail.”

He referenced the recent controversy with the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors who were told to stop sectarian Christian prayer at their meetings by the American Civil Liberties Union.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg,” said Boykin. No one will do anything to offend a Muslim, he said, but they don’t care to offend Christians.

Boykin encouraged local pastors to call elected officials and hold them accountable for passing Christian legislation. He also said that preachers should spread the message of truth and get involved in civil government.

Boykin, an evangelical Christian, has seen a fair share of controversy over the years for his fundamental beliefs on the subject. Many other organizations challenge his type of religious influence in the government.

The ACLU, for example, said in a letter to the Board of Supervisors, that “sectarian prayers by a government body violate the First Amendment.”
