Reidsville got into the holiday spirit Friday night with the annual lighting of its Christmas trees.
One tree stood in the traffic circle on West Morehead and Scales Streets while the other stood in Mural Park.
Mayor James K. Festerman kicked off the festivities by welcoming everyone to the city. Festerman said in his introduction, a young boy put him in his place and let him know he wasn’t the most important person downtown.
“Just a few minutes ago I ran into a young fellow and I said, ‘Did you come to see the mayor,’” Festerman said. “He replied, ‘No’ and I said, ‘You didn’t come to see the mayor? And he said, ‘I came to see Santa Claus.’”
Santa and Mrs. Claus came to downtown Reidsville to let children put in their requests for Christmas presents. Santa Claus was one of many treats visitors experienced downtown during the evening.
Hayrides were offered around downtown, marshmallows were roasted and carolers gathered under the official Christmas tree.
The sparkling lights, which always illuminate the trees lining Scales Street, were complemented by the newly added Christmas decorations up and down the street.
Shop owners also got into the spirit by decorating their windows with Christmas decorations and scenes.
As a special treat the Reidsville Downtown Corporation, which was responsible for the event, set up a snowmaker over the “R” painted on the road at the intersection of Scales and Gilmer streets. Children ran beneath the snow trying to catch the flakes as they fell.
People came on and off throughout the evening to look at the magical scene which can only be created during the Christmas season.
