Job Seekers back to help unemployed in Danville

Because many people still need jobs in Danville, Job Seekers support sessions will kick off again on July 19.

Job Seekers offers workshops on the job search and application process, including practice interviews and résumé-writing. Additionally, it helps those who are unemployed network with each other and visiting employers.

“It gives them the realization that they’re not the only person,” said coordinator Christy Oakes, branch manager for Adecco Employment Services.

The series, which will be about 10 weeks long, in many ways serves as a support group for the unemployed as attendees swap stories and share their grief.

Attendees also share if they know of others who are hiring. A lot of positions in Danville are filled through word-of-mouth, Oakes said.

The local job situation is looking better with many positions available, but job seekers need to be open to different pay rates, shifts or commutes, she said. Employers are looking to fill jobs and participate in the mock interviews.

Many look for employees with the basic work skills like a good attitude, attendance, verbal skills and the ability to work as part of a team, Oakes explained.

The first session on July 19 will answer questions regarding the unemployment process with speakers from the Virginia Employment Commission. Networking starts at 8:30 a.m. with presentations at 9 a.m. at the Regional Center for Advanced Technology and Training at 121 Slayton Ave.
