To the editor:
The local AARP chapter will disband if it does not get some new members. Many of our old members have died and some have resigned for reasons unknown. I will attempt to give reasons for more people in Danville and surrounding area to join our local group.
AARP meets once a month at the senior center; the time and place can be changed by members. AARP purpose is to provide service to our members and our community.
In the recent past, we held local forums — one had an expert clearly explain the new health reform plan and long term care — good and bad, with ideas how to improve it. AARP keeps in touch with our General Assembly so that the views of our members (50 years and older) are considered. The local chapter has visited local nursing homes entertaining those groups as well as helping to solve problems. AARP provides help to God’s Storehouse.
Our members get discounts at retail stores, tour groups, motels, insurance, car rentals and a host of other services. Programs are presented at most meetings — hearing new ideas and services. Bingo is played at meetings from time to time. We have aided medical and nursing groups in solving some problems associated with our age group. Financial and personal problems have been discussed through program presentations. AARP also reviews and identifies key public issues which can result in program discussion.
Members get monthly magazines and newsletters. Another purpose of this chapter is to provide goals for prolonging and improving the mental, physical and spiritual well-being of our age group. One of the most appreciated results of membership is the development of genuine fellowship. AARP is absolutely non-political; there are 4,000 local chapters with more than 32 million members, and Virginia has more than 800,000 members.
