Several students at Galileo Magnet High School in Danville have something to celebrate this summer.
Last week, administrators at the school learned that many of the 21 students enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program scored higher than the world average in five courses.
The IB program is designed for rigorous academic work that selected students complete over their junior and senior year in high school. At the end of the year, they take an exam that is scored from one to seven, with seven being the highest. The exams are the same all over the world for students participating in the IB program and are graded by examiners in outside of the school system. Students at Galileo High scored higher than the world average in English, French, Spanish, Psychology and Biology.
The school has received high scores in the past, but never in this many subjects. Galileo High School principal Jay Lancaster just began his first year at the school. He was very excited to hear about the scores and, while he has not been there long, he is positive the high scores were due to the “tremendous faculty” that work at Galileo.
“This upcoming year will be Galileo’s tenth year,” said Lancaster. “And I think (the scores) are just a combination of everything just coming together. It is a great program and Danville produces some exceptional students.”
He said many of the teachers had been at Galileo from the beginning and in the next few years he expects to see standards getting even higher. Next year the IB program will have more than 40 students enrolled and he hopes that they will score above average in all seven subjects.
Superintendent Sue Davis was also thrilled when she heard about the above average scores. She also gave all the credit to the faculty and the students at Galileo High School.
“We are really proud of the students,” said Davis. “To be above the world average is really significant.”
