The Caswell County Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney jointly determined that the incident was a “tragic accident,” according to a sheriff’s office news release.

The accidental shooting was reported just after midnight on Dec. 28 at a home on Dewey Drive in the Gibsonville community. When emergency responders arrived, they found a boy suffering from a gunshot wound to his abdomen and transported him to Annie Penn Hospital, where he later died.

The initial investigation found a family member accidentally discharged the firearm, according to a past news release. The names of the victim and family member aren’t being released.
