The city of Danville will receive a $600,000 grant to help in a downtown revitalization project, Gov. Bob McDonnell announced in a news release Wednesday.
“We’re delighted to get as much out of that grant program as possible,” said Danville City Manager Joe King.
The state’s Industrial Revitalization Fund money will help develop a $1.2 million parking project at the Davis Warehouse site at 321 Craghead St., King said. The Industrial Development Authority of Danville is purchasing the building for $575,000.
The site would become public parking and parking for adjacent projects, King said. The parking project is part of a larger one to redevelop buildings in the Tobacco Warehouse District, and is vital for securing a nearby unannounced project that would bring $14.5 million in investment over three years and 70 to 100 jobs downtown. Of those, 40 would be new jobs.
The project would assist the city in its efforts to bring a medical facility downtown, King confirmed.
“It means that all of these pieces to the River District project are falling in place so the availability of a grant like this helps move projects along much faster than would otherwise be the case,” King said.
The city had to match the state’s funding. King expects the city to announce the “cornerstone” project within a few weeks.
The state awarded $2.8 million total in Industrial Revitalization Fund grants to six projects, including $50,000 to the Industrial Development Authority of Halifax County for the former Burlington Plant.
