A new Wentworth Town Council conducted business Tuesday night after a new mayor and mayor pro tem were named and the newest council member joined its ranks.
The Honorable J. Mark Pegram, clerk of Superior Court, was on hand to administer the oath of office to Wentworth’s recently elected members. With unanimous votes from the board, Dennis Paschal Jr. and Evelyn Conner were selected to serve as mayor and mayor pro tem, respectively.
Outgoing Mayor Pro Tem James Belcher was presented with a plaque from former Mayor Robert Aswell commending him for his service to the town.
“It was my honor and privilege to serve, and I want to thank Dennis and Evelyn, who were original members of the board and welcomed me right in,” he said. “It’s with deep regret that I wasn’t able to throw my hat into the ring to have ran this year, but I hope in the future I can serve the council or the town in some other capacity.”
Belcher withdrew from the election in October, citing recent changes to his work schedule.
In other business, the new board approved the ratification of the interlocal agreement for the consolidation of Rockingham County’s 911 services. It also adopted the holiday closing schedule for next year.
The council will continue to meet on the first Tuesday of each month. For additional information, visit www.townofwentworth.com/town_govt.php.
