Smith Mountain Dam inspected after earthquake

»  Comments | Post a Comment

It was all calm at Smith Mountain Dam Wednesday, just one day after the earthquake hit.

John Shepelwich, spokesman for Appalachian Power was at the dam when the earthquake happened.

"We felt a very light vibration," said Shepelwich. "It was more of a slight noise. It sounded like a motor, and we thought it was coming from the dam itself."

Shepelwich tells us an employee in the visitor's center did say she felt the building shake, but a worker inside the dam during the earthquake told officials he did not feel a thing.

Shepelwich says is inspected regularly, and it has been determined there was no damage or any other problems caused by the earthquake.
