How to help Halifax tornado victims

Friends and community members help move debris on Liberty Road in Halifax County, on April 28 where an F2 tornado ripped through the area on April 27, destroying four homes and leaving a woman dead.

Halifax County Emergency Services is fielding numerous offers for volunteer help and donations.

Right now, it is using experienced volunteer organizations, according to a news release.

The Virginia Baptist Association’s Disaster Relief team is assessing the Liberty area. Halifax County Emergency Services personnel are also completing a secondary needs assessment of shelter, food and water.

Emergency services requested a volunteer coordination team from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management and anticipates it will be on-site Saturday to coordinate volunteers. Emergency services is asking those who want to volunteer wait until a request for volunteers is made

Donate clothing, shoes, personal care and hygiene items at First Baptist Millstone Church (at 1157 Millstone Church Trail in Nathalie on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.) or Hands Up For Halifax (at 807 Traver Ave. in South Boston.) Donate money to the American Red Cross, Greater Richmond Chapter, which includes Halifax. Call the Red Cross at (434) 476-5148 or toll-free at (866) 242-8757.
