WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Energy awarded $734,759 to the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research for research and breeding better plants for biofuel production, according to a news release.
Rep. Tom Perriello and U.S. Senators Jim Webb and Mark Warner announced the award in a news release on Thursday.
The Department of Energy’s Office of Science is partnering with the Department of Agriculture to award $8.9 million for efforts across the country that are helping develop new energy technologies.
“Our area’s rich agricultural heritage positions us to be leaders in developing biofuels that will increase our energy security, improve our environment and create new jobs,” Perriello said in the release. “I am excited and proud to see the next generation of new energy jobs and investments taking hold right here in Southside.”
Webb said he saw first-hand the Institute’s ability to link education and research to economic development in Southside.
“This funding will help bring more good jobs to the region to develop new domestic energy sources which our country needs,” Webb said.
“I am very pleased that the Institute will have a role in our efforts to build a clean energy economy through cost-effective, sustainable biofuels,” added Warner.
