Heat buildup in fiberboard stacked outside Blue Ridge Fiberboard on Celotex Drive early Monday morning started a fire that caused moderate damage, the Danville Fire Marshal’s Office.
“The investigation found that heat built up over a period of days in the stacks of fiberboard,” Assistant Fire Marshal Richie Guill said in a news release.
The fiberboard was “stacked tightly and wrapped in plastic” and the heat continued to build until the boards “reached their ignition temperature,” Guill said.
Damage to the building was determined to be moderate, since the fire only affected an exterior wall and a small office inside the building. It is estimated that about 100 pallets of fiberboard were lost.
The fire started at about 4 a.m. Monday, according to a report from Battalion Chief Dallas R. Swiney. He said a large fire was visible outside one of the buildings at Blue Ridge Fiberboard, when firefighters arrived.
“The fire had broken through into the building but it was held in check by automatic sprinklers,” Swiney said in a news release. Most of the burning fiberboard was stacked outside, next to the building.
At 4 a.m., three engines, two ladder trucks and two command units, as well as 14 firefighters responded to the scene.
Shortly after 8 a.m., an engine and ladder truck and a command vehicle remained at the scene, but were not visible from the company’s gated entrance.
