Six of the seven candidates in the June 8 Republican primary in the 5th Congressional District are expected to appear for a debate Tuesday night at Liberty University.
It will be their second group appearance of the day. Most of the candidates also are expected to speak to a group of Smith Mountain Lake business owners and residents Tuesday afternoon.
Liberty University announced Monday that its law school would sponsor a debate in its Supreme Courtroom, starting at 7 tonight.
The six candidates expected to appear at LU are Ken Boyd, Ron Ferrin, Jim McKelvey, Michael McPadden, Feda Morton and Laurence Verga, the university said.
State Sen. Robert Hurt, the apparent front-runner in the primary, won't appear at LU. Hurt instead will be speaking at a National College graduation tonight in Martinsville, and had agreed to that engagement in February, his campaign spokesman said.
The winner of the primary will represent the Republican Party in the November election against Rep. Tom Perriello, D-5th District.
Lynchburg itself is in the 6th Congressional District, not the 5th District. The 5th District does include Campbell and Appomattox counties and part of Bedford County.
Rep. Bob Goodlatte of Roanoke, R-6th, is not facing a primary election.
Mathew Staver, dean of the Liberty University School of Law, will moderate the debate.
The candidates' appearance at Smith Mountain Lake is scheduled for 2 p.m. at The Pointe at Mariner's Landing, 1217 Graves Harbor Trail, Huddleston.
McKelvey, Verga, McPadden, Ferrin and Boyd were expected to attend, according to Jay White, spokesman for the Eastlake Business Association. Hurt had not confirmed his plans as of Monday afternoon, White said, and Morton had not responded to an invitation.
