The final vote to approve the city’s support of Danville Public Schools in the amount of almost $20 million for the 2011 school year will take place Tuesday during the regular meeting of Danville City Council.
Also on the agenda is a first reading of a proposal to accept $15,588 in Juvenile Accountability Block Grant money from the U.S. Department of Justice.
The Danville Police Department proposes to use the funds to train law enforcement, court personnel and school staff to “address effective strategies and solutions to prevent and control juvenile crime.”
The city will be responsible for $1,732 in matching funds for the program, but half of that money will come from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, leaving Danville’s general fund responsible for supplying $866 for the program.
The final item on the regular agenda is a vote on a resolution that will allow Yanceyville, N.C., to connect to water lines already in place to provide water to Caswell County, N.C., for use during emergencies. The lines are owned by Caswell County, which would be billed if Yanceyville uses the water.
A heavy work session agenda will follow the regular meeting, and will include discussion on the status of the downtown post office building, plans for the former rail passenger waiting area at the Crossing at the Dan, a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to purchase equipment that the Danville Police Department would oversee and amendments to the city’s personnel system.
Council members also will discuss raising court fees to pay for courthouse maintenance and a request from Sheriff Mike Mondul to look over cuts made to his department by the state Compensation Board totaling $114,971 for 2011.
Mondul said jail population is up, while overall staffing is down, and suggests additional court fees to cover some of his department’s needs.
Finishing the work session will be a discussion on appointments to nine local boards and commissions.
