Despite a down economy, United Way of Danville-Pittsylvania County raised $760,000 to help the community by funding partners and services.
The fundraising fell short of the initial goal of just more than $1 million, but local plant closures and layoffs impacted efforts when payroll deductible gifts comprise two-thirds of the campaign.
Yet, the agency generated more than $700,000 in grant funds over the past five years and proposes a new strategy to leverage the community’s resources and engage residents to “Live United.”
Yes, assistance programs need money to get things done, but fundraising is not the end goal, nor does a dollar amount measure success, said President Patrick Jinks.
The community also offers non-monetary resources. Success doesn’t mean just helping people with immediate needs, but addressing root problems and committing to change, Jinks said.
In order to do this, United Way seeks to drive measurable results, develop revenue and resources and promote personal engagement.
The agency needs to leave the 12-month framework and think about both today and tomorrow. For instance, the agency and community must continue helping immediate needs like utility assistance, but the problem isn’t utility rates. The problem is poverty, Jinks said.
Jinks said the community holds the solutions, but must work together to improve opportunities for education, income and good health.
“We’ll be looking for you. We’re casting,” Jinks told a roomful of supporters at United Way’s annual meeting on Wednesday morning. “This is a casting call.”
