Piedmont Health Foundation dissolves, distributes money

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Piedmont Health Foundation’s board of directors announced Tuesday night it would discontinue operation and awarded $1.15 million in grants as part of the liquidation of its assets.

“We really wanted to give the money back to the people,” said Dr. Michael Moore of the board of directors.

The board agreed to return donated resources to the people of the Dan River Region as it would no longer raise money to continue supporting the foundation on an ongoing basis. The foundation should be closed down in the coming weeks, Moore said.

The Free Clinic of Danville received $700,000 to be applied to the clinic’s endowment fund.

“This has been a godsend, I think, for this community,” said board member and clinic volunteer Virginia Hall about the Free Clinic.

Dr. Edwin Harvie Jr., clinic medical director, said the money essentially “regalvanizes” the Free Clinic in its commitment to serve.

“I don’t have the words to express the profound gratitude … Simply, I should say, thank you thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” Harvie said.

Piedmont Access to Health Services, Inc. received $350,000 from the foundation to pay down the mortgage on its building at 705 Main St. CEO Kay Crane of PATHS thanked the board for allowing PATHS to continue to “step up” for the region.

“Our growth really came out of the need in this community,” Crane said.

Caswell Family Medical Center received $100,000 from the foundation to pay the remaining balance of its building mortgage — with the rest to be used for capital improvements. CEO Shirley Deal thanked the foundation board for allowing the nonprofit to look out for patients while also helping the community health center to expand.

“Between the three organizations, we can all be very proud and we can know you will continue to do the good work,” Hall said.

The Piedmont Health Foundation got its start as the Danville Regional Health Foundation, part of the Dan River Health Systems, which was created in 1996. The name changed after the sale of Danville Regional Medical Center to LifePoint Hospitals in 2005.

The goal of the foundation was to promote health awareness and improve health services in the Dan River Region.
