Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates William Howell announced Tuesday that members had been appointed to more than 100 state boards, commissions and a joint House-Senate committee.
This region’s delegates — Danny Marshall, Donald Merricks and Charles Poindexter — remained on several boards and commissions, and were assigned to some new ones.
Marshall, a Republican who represents the 14th District — Danville and parts of Pittsylvania and Henry counties — remains on the Virginia Tobacco Commission, Virginia Housing Commission, the Manufacturing Development Commission, the Public-Private Partnership Advisory Commission and the New College Institute board.
He has also been appointed to the Virginia Workforce Council for the first time.
Marshall said the council works with the governor to meet work force needs in Virginia.
“I asked to be put on the Workforce Council, because work force development is such an important part of helping this part of the state,” Marshall said.
Delegates are assigned to boards and commissions during the non-session times of the year, Marshall said. Since he sits on the Commerce and Labor committee when the House of Delegates is in session, it made sense to work on the Workforce Council as well, he said.
Merricks, a Republican representing the 16th District — part of Pittsylvania and Henry counties and part of Martinsville — has been reappointed to the Commission on Interstate Cooperation, the Special Advisory Commission on Mandated Health Insurance Benefits, the New College Institute Board of Directors and the Western Virginia Public Education Consortium.
Merricks has also been appointed to the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center Board of Trustees for the first time.
In a news release, Merricks said the purpose of the SVHEC is to encourage the expansion of higher education on several levels and to develop specific goals for higher education in Southside with the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.
Poindexter, the Republican 9th District representative for Floyd, Franklin and part of Pittsylvania counties, was reappointed to the Virginia Commission on Energy and Environment, the Roanoke Higher Education Authority Board of Trustees, the Roanoke River Basin Advisory Committee and the Roanoke River Basin Bi-State Commission.
Poindexter also added one new appointment to his agenda — the Western Virginia Public Education Consortium.
