Pittsylvania County Supervisors: Bring Centra here

»  Comments | Post a Comment

If Centra can’t build its proposed new facility in Danville, the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors has another idea — put the outpatient surgical center in the county.

Supervisor Marshall Ecker proposed a resolution inviting Centra to locate in the county, noting that the board would support Centra’s certificate of public need and offer them whatever other support the board can give, including help in finding a good location.

The recommendation passed unanimously.

In other business, the board voted to proceed with a roundup of unlicensed dogs.

Pittsylvania County Administrator Dan Sleeper said there have been numerous complaints of dogs running loose, many of which have been found to be unlicensed and lacking a rabies vaccination.

Sleeper noted that not only does the county lose money when dogs are not licensed, it is a danger to the citizens to have dogs loose that have not been vaccinated.

The proposal would divide the county into four sections, and each area would be systematically inspected for any loose, unlicensed dogs — even if they are on private property. Any dogs found without tags would be picked up, and their owners fined and required to license and vaccinate them in order to have them returned.

Dogs with tags would not be picked up even if they are loose, Sleeper said, unless the board votes to change ordinances about confining animals.

Supervisor Coy Harville and board Chairman Hank Davis both stressed that it is currently not against the law for dogs to run loose in the county, but it is illegal for them to be unlicensed — and that the roundup would include picking up dogs on private property that do not have dog licenses.

The roundup would take about three weeks for each of the four sections of the county, Sleeper said.

The next step in the process will be advertising the roundup so residents are aware it will be happening, Sleeper said.

The board voted unanimously in favor of the roundup.
