Danville and Pittsylvania County saw unemployment rates creep up slightly from May to June, according to Virginia Employment Commission data.
The rates are on par with what they were a year ago.
Danville, ranked as having the fifth worst unemployment in the state, saw unemployment increase from 13.4 percent to 13.5 percent from May to June. The unemployment rate was also 13.5 percent in June 2009.
The Danville metropolitan statistical area remains the worst metro area in the state with unemployment at 11.9 percent, which is the same as in June 2009.
The small month-to-month change could be from the civilian labor force increasing by 175 people, said labor economist Tim Kestner with the VEC. Usually around this time, more people enter the labor force after graduating from high school or college.
These rates are not seasonally adjusted and compares to the not seasonally adjusted Virginia unemployment rate of 7.1 percent and the national unemployment rate of 9.6 percent in June.
