After two years of fundraising, the Veterans Memorial Committee has begun installing a decorative fence around the Danville-Pittsylvania County Veterans Memorial at Dan Daniel Memorial Park.
Davis Newman, chair of the committee, said the bricks for the fence’s piers arrived Monday, and Hughes and Atkins Construction Co. began installing them on Tuesday.
The crew is currently getting the piers in; then they will be filled with concrete and be capped. Once the brickwork is done, the wrought iron fence will be installed.
The new fence is designed to be decorative, maintenance free and to “set the memorial aside and make it special,” Newman said as fundraising began.
Newman said he anticipated the fence will be completed in March — as long as the weather cooperates, something that hasn’t been happening.
“We’ve run into other expenses,” Newman said. “We’ve got water running out of everything. We’ve never seen rain like this — never dreamed of it. We have to put drain tiles in to get that water away from the memorial.”
Davis said he does not yet know what installing drain tiles will cost, but says the project is necessary to prevent rain damage to the base of the memorial.
The committee is getting quotes on what that unexpected project will cost, he said, noting only that he expects it to be “considerable.”
Commemorative bricks, engraved-to-order to honor veterans, can be purchased to help maintain the memorial through the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region. Call (434) 793-0884 to purchase a brick or make a donation.
