Downtown Danville will have a new restaurant in the former Purple Onion location — Jake’s on Main.
Jake and Connie Eckman, owners of The II Georges Inn on Broad Street, are opening the restaurant in March, according to a news release from Danville’s Economic Development Department.
In order to remodel the building to suit their needs, and to order needed equipment, the couple applied for a Downtown Enhancement Grant of $100,000.
In exchange for the grant, the Eckmans signed a performance agreement that states they will remain in that location for at least seven years and create at least eight new jobs — six full-time and two part-time — and maintain that minimum level of jobs throughout the life of the agreement. If they do not abide by all the terms of the agreement, the Eckmans will have to repay the $100,000 grant.
The agreement also states if the restaurant ceases operation during the first seven years, the couple will have to repay the city one-seventh of the grant for “each year short of the required seven (7) years.”
Anne Moore-Sparks, project manager for Danville’s Office of Economic Development, said the new restaurant will “offer a trendy, fun place to have great good in a social environment,” with upscale American food, a variety of microbrews, wines and spirits and an “emphasis on fresh and healthy ingredients.”
“I am extremely excited that Jake and Connie have chosen downtown as the home for their second location,” Moore-Sparks said. “The Eckmans are a great team in that they combine experience, creativity and the skill sets necessary to operate a successful restaurant.”
The menu is expected to have appetizers that range from $6 to $10, entrees/sandwiches in the $8 to $22 range and desserts that will range from $5 to $7. When spring arrives, outdoor seating will become available.
Jake’s on Main will be located at 215 Main St., between Amburn and Company Salon & Spa on Main and Lou’s Antiques.
The Eckmans plan to be open from 4 to 10 p.m. Wednesday-Friday and from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays and will be serving “upscale American food along with a large assortment of high end microbrews, wines and spirits,” according to the news release.
