Local unemployment declined from September to October as more people found work, according to Virginia Employment Commission data.
Unemployment for the Danville metropolitan statistical area (Danville and Pittsylvania County) at a rate of 10.6 percent was better than last year and more on par with unemployment two years ago, said Ann Lang, VEC senior economist.
Unemployment was 10.7 percent in November 2008 and 10.5 percent in December 2008, she added.
Yet, Danville still had the worst unemployment of Virginia’s metropolitan areas. Because Danville is a smaller area, small changes also can move the rate quite a bit, Lang said.
Virginia’s unemployment rate of 6.5 percent remained unchanged from September to October. The national unemployment rate was 9 percent. All these rates are not seasonally adjusted.
